TIMOTHY J. McDONOUGH

McDONOUGH
TIMOTHY J.

Timothy McDonough, a lifelong Pittsburgher, devoted journalist, husband, and father passed away at his home on December 31st at the age of 68.

Tim was born in the Beechview neighborhood to James and Ann McDonough, and he was raised alongside his three siblings, Mary, Sarah, and John.

Tim attended St. Catherine of Siena Grade School, where his curiosity and love of storytelling led to an early interest in journalism through school publications. At South Hills Catholic High School, he served as editor of the school magazine and newspaper.

He went on to attend Duquesne University, where he further developed his passion for journalism through work with the university's radio station and magazine, and as an editor for The Duquesne Duke.

Tim dedicated more than four decades to journalism, beginning as a regional reporter and editor at the Pittsburgh Press before joining the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, where he worked until his retirement in 2024. Throughout his career, Tim was known for his integrity, mentorship, and commitment to telling meaningful stories - especially those that elevated voices sometimes unheard.

Tim met his wife, Lorraine, while at Duquesne University. They married in 1984 and celebrated their 41st anniversary this past year. Together, they raised two children, whom Tim loved deeply and supported wholeheartedly.

Tim was a dedicated coach in basketball, baseball, and softball, with a strong interest in youth sports development and scouting. He was an avid reader, lover of poetry and classical music, a devoted Pittsburgh Pirates fan, and a gracious host who delighted in sharing meals - especially backyard barbecues - with family and friends. He was closely connected to the Sacred Heart community, where he supported parish life by editing The Sacred Heart Beat newsletter while his children attended.

Tim is survived by his wife Lorraine, daughter Colleen McDonough, her husband Eli Dolly, and his son James McDonough.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages honoring Tim's legacy by supporting local journalism.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at St. Jude Parish, Sacred Heart Church on Friday, January 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Arrangements by the WALTER J. ZALEWSKI FUNERAL HOME, Lawrenceville.

Plant a tree: How does it work

When your purchase is complete, a post will be made on the tribute wall of the deceased signifying the planting of a memorial tree.

An official certificate recognizing your purchase will be included with your email receipt. You can then forward the email to the family or print it and give it to them personally.

After an order is placed, our forestry partners will plant the tree in the area of greatest need (nearest the funeral home), according to the planting schedule for the year.

Due to seasonal conditions, the tree planting takes place during the spring and summer.

Tree Planting Timeline

Orders placed in:

January - May

Planting will take place in Spring or Summer of the same year.

June - December

Planting will take place in Spring of the following year.
