Steven Carl Sobel

February 25, 1957 - December 31, 2025

Steven Carl Sobel

Steven Carl Sobel passed away peacefully at Ochsner Hospital on December 31st, 2025.
Faced with numerous health issues, Steven fought the good fight for 20 years but remained optimistic through it all. With the help of his family, he lived a wonderful full life to the very end.
Steven will be remembered for his enormous talent for having made an indelible mark on the New Orleans professional hair industry. The Steven Sobel Salon was a fixture in the New Orleans area, having serviced thousands throughout its 40 years. He had so many loyal clients that we would often joke that he should run for mayor. Steven's clients were so indebted to him they would even travel long distances just to have their hair done by only the best. He also made house calls to make sure no one went without the perfect coif. Not only was Steven loved by the New Orleans community but recognized nationally as well. He received several national awards, most notably Top 100 Salons in America by Elle Magazine for four consecutive years.
Steven was born in New Orleans to Etta and Jules Sobel on February 25th, 1957. He was the youngest of five and was often referred to as "baby brother". When he was a young boy, he moved to Brooklyn, New York with his father where he spent most of his childhood and graduated from Brooklyn's New Utrecht High School. Steven attended Brooklyn College then transferred to the University of New Orleans upon his move back to his hometown. His college days were brief though as he realized his true passion was making people beautiful, so he started on his journey by graduating from the John Jay Beauty School.
But Steven's greatest love was for his family. He married Vicki Gagliano in Florence, Italy on May 27th, 1993, after a whirlwind romance, and from then on referred to her as his "bride". Together they raised two wonderful children, Alexander and Natalie. They were his pride and joy and were fortunate to have had the best of their dad's years.
Steven also loved his many pets. His fur babies were a fixture in his salon. Upon entering, his clients were greeted by one of his precious golden doodles, Midnight, the most famous of the shop dogs, and more recently Bear or Bentlie.
It is with a heavy heart that his loving family says good-bye. Steven is survived by his wife Vicki, his children Alexander and Natalie, his siblings Phyllis Feran, David Sobel (Pamela), Annie Elsas (Byron), his brother-in-law Alan Smason, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, his sister Sally Smason, and his brother-in-law Russell Feran.
Visitation will begin Friday, January 9th at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel at Temple Sinai, 6227 St. Charles Avenue. Services officiated by Rabbi Daniel Sherman and Cantor Joel Colman will begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Hebrew Rest Cemetery # 3, 2100 Frenchmen Street at Pelopidas Street. His immediate family then invites you to join us for a Celebration of Life at 1:00 p.m. at our home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation by accessing their website at https://give.themmrf.org.

Plant a tree: How does it work

When your purchase is complete, a post will be made on the tribute wall of the deceased signifying the planting of a memorial tree.

An official certificate recognizing your purchase will be included with your email receipt. You can then forward the email to the family or print it and give it to them personally.

After an order is placed, our forestry partners will plant the tree in the area of greatest need (nearest the funeral home), according to the planting schedule for the year.

Due to seasonal conditions, the tree planting takes place during the spring and summer.

Tree Planting Timeline

Orders placed in:

January - May

Planting will take place in Spring or Summer of the same year.

June - December

Planting will take place in Spring of the following year.
